Honouring a D-Day Paratrooper
Geoff Pattinson served as a Sergeant in A Company, 9th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment during the Second World War. He volunteered for the glider assault on the Merville Gun Battery, one of the most critical objectives on D-Day, tasked with neutralising German guns threatening the Allied landings on Sword Beach.
His mission almost ended before it began when the tow rope connecting his glider to its tug aircraft snapped, forcing it to crash-land in Hampshire rather than Normandy. Undeterred, Geoff crossed to France later on D-Day, rejoined 9 PARA, and fought in the bitter battles around Château Saint-Côme and the Orne bridgehead.
After the war, Geoff became a respected member of both Shooters Hill Golf Club and the Eltham & Chislehurst Parachute Regimental Association, remaining committed to preserving the history and spirit of The Parachute Regiment throughout his life.
To honour his legacy, the Eltham & Chislehurst PRA is proud to host the Geoff Pattinson Memorial Golf Day.
